A Bombguts blogger is claiming that your favorite Final Fantasy VII heroes have all the depth of a child's doodling. You can check out his illustrations here. In his defense, I really like these drawings masterpieces.

By way of rebuttal I want to propose two lists (which I welcome you to expand upon in the comments).
Why FFVII characters are so beloved to begin with
1) They change and adapt throughout the story
2) They experience self-doubt, courage of conviction and everything in between
3)They aren't invincible
4) They have loved ones, imaginative homes and havens, and personal stake in their adventure
5) Characters have specific music and dialects to create almost audible voices
Why it's hip to say FFVII is overrated
1) Because many fans hold the game as sacrosanct
2) Because it makes people feel insightful to bash what everyone else adores
3) Because many people think the fact that there are other equally amazing games somehow diminishes the quality of this one
4) Because it was such a mainstream success--if it has mass appeal something must be wrong with it
5) Because they have giant sword envy
What do you think?

Agree on your list of why they bash FFIV...another typical "It's the best? Well then I hate it." type attitudes I find about the game, most haven't even played it...they just love bandwagons.
I really liked the FFIV characters because each character was largely unique and yet they managed to fit together well. Plus I've always been a bigger fan of the more futuristic themed fantasy.

"It's the best RPG of all time!" is something I usually hear out of the mouths of the GameFAQs crowd. They've obviously never played anything else. It's a good game, but the fact that people proclaim it as 'the best' makes other people proclaim it as 'the worst' just to piss them off. Okay, yeah you covered all that.

Ppphhh. Garbage. Might as well go to a Micheal Jackson forum and say "MJ was over rated". I'd get lots of attention and it'd be just SO funny! Hahaha.
Sadly, I'd then have to drown myself in a sink for stooping to such incredibly low and pathetic depths.

I like FF7, it has all the elements for a good RPG. If they made a remake I'd diss the random battles though. And Caith Sith. And maybe make the story more understandable the first playthrough.
But yeah, what makes FF7 great are the characters (except Caith Sith).

Awww come on :P Cait Sith was cool! Even if his character design was a bit weird heh. He makes far more sense when you find out he's just a puppet for Reeves anyway (omg 10 year old spoliers!)
as far as weird characters go though, NOTHING beats FF9's Quina Quen:

I love that thing. Best dialogue ever.

Well, yeah, Quina was charmingly stupid. And had the best minigame ever! Still don't like Caith Sith though :|
