You nominated, you voted, and in the end, you surprised no one. Final Fantasy VII took a clear first place spot as Limit Break’s best JRPG ever. In a close second was the SNES classic Final Fantasy VI, a game famous for its ambitiously large cast and one action packed trip to the opera. Ultimately though, Cloud, Tifa, and Sephiroth came out on top.
So what makes Square’s magnum opus, a game that arguably brought JRPG gaming to the mainstream, so unforgettable? For one, it was among the first RPGs to use fully rendered 3D characters. Although we may look back and see hopelessly polygonal figures today, in 1997 the opening sweeps of Midgar seemed as fantastically real as could be. Couple cutting edge graphics with the swelling, striking score of Nobuo Uematsu, including digitized vocals on the track "One-Winged Angel,” and you have nothing short of an aesthetic masterpiece.
Combat in VII used Square’s Active Time Battle enhanced turn-based system. Players controlled three characters at a time, which was a downsize for the series. Using Materia, cinematic summons, and devastating desperation attacks called Limit Breaks, Cloud and company pummeled Turks, Shinra soldiers, and Sephiroth’s henchmen to pulp.
Undeniably the characters of VII were the emotional foundation of the game. Unlike many JRPGs, where heroes were self-assured, noble, and courageous, FFVII featured a motley crew of anti-heroes, often not certain of their convictions and vulnerable to doubt and frustration. Among the misfits: Cloud Strife, a reluctant and dour leader, Tifa Lockheart, a feisty and forlorn fighter, Barret Wallace, the rebel rabble rouser who can’t seem to see the whole picture, and Aeris Gainsborough, a hunted and haunted flower seller. The quiet flaws of each cast member granted FFVII players the personal access required to truly inhabit new roles.
Final Fantasy VII grappled with themes of love, loss, terrorism, environmentalism, family, and anarchy. The rich range of motifs felt more flexible and urgent than past Final Fantasy titles that pitted good against evil and saw characters start out and stay strong and courageous. Instead, VII challenged players to empathize in unexpected places, question the nature of heroism, and develop organic vengeance after a couple particularly shocking plot points.
It may be no surprise that you chose FFVII to represent the best of the best in JRPG gaming, but that’s only because, to so many, the choice is obvious.
This week, we’ll nominate and vote on the best Action RPG of all time.

Dude, if you're going to say the game you like, the least you can do is type the right name, it's not Fantasy Star, it's Phantasy Star.

It's not my fault the developers can't spell, they spelled it wrong not me. But thanks for the needless correction.

I applaud the alliteration. Couldn't have described FF7 better myself.

"it's" and "its" you should learn the difference
you said "a game famous for it’s ambitiously large cast" which means:
"a game famous for it is ambitiously large cast'

Wow, yet again I get the feeling that hanging around on Limit Break is like sitting in a room full of kindred spirits. ;]

I think I'll give that a go. I recently picked it up for the GBA, which pleasantly enough, runs on my DS!

This game deserved the win. Noone who has played it can say they are surprised to see it here. This game is only slightly behind Fallout as my most enjoyable gaming experience of all time.

I love FF7 to bits but Xenogears is a far better game.

A Final Fantasy game won the best JRPG ever on a poll on a Final Fantasy fansite...
Get out of here...
Final Fantasy VII is good but massively overrated, I guarantee that if IX and VII swapped places, IX would have won that poll...
But IX is the best of the PS1 gen, FFX best of the PS2 gen, FF6 best of all...
Overall though
1. Final Fantasy VI
2. Final Fantasy X
3. Final Fantasy IX
The true list, and everyone knows Chrono Trigger is the best JRPG ever.

"Ah, so according to that person FFIX is the best. No, wait... FFVI best of all? Ok, so FFVI is the best one. What's that? CT best ever? Okay then..."
Just for the record, Breath of Fire IV is my favorite JRPG with FFVII a close 2nd.

Maybe some day I'll get around to actually playing FFVII. I don't think it's on PSN over here yet and playing it on the PC is horrible because the sound keeps cutting out every few scenes.

Sony's marketing of FF7 brought JRPG's into the mainstream, the game itself just had the cutscenes to make the advertisements look nice. People seem to forget that gaming is a business and Sony's marketing team was at the top of their game for FF7. So Sony's marketing team, thank you for bringing JRPG's into the mainstream.

Thats not a bad game at all. But the (ingame) graphics sucked even back in the day.
Saying FF7 is the best rpg ever is like admitting being a big fat noob that started out on
playstation; yeah pathetic :p
