My first anime review will be about Blood+ because... well, I just finished watching it, that's why.
Build-up: Saya Otonashi suffer from amnesia. She lives a quiet life in Okinawa, Japan, with her two brothers and her father, an ex-soldier in the army. The children are adopted, but you can hardly tell, it's a harmonic family with no troubles.
Little does she know that her past is catching up to her and as things turn ugly, she has to fight to keep her secluded life while at the same time withstand the horrible memories that slowly drip back into her consciousness.
Why you should watch it:
- Detailed drawing. Holy jebus, several times throughout the series, I had to pause and rewind because I was looking at the background details and missed the dialogue.
- Emotional Story. From the beginning to end, you always wonder what will happen to Saya and her family. The storywriters have built up the background history pretty well. As you get to know the full plot, your cheers will diminish.
- Excellent character development. I was surprised to see that the personalities of the characters changed in such a realistic way, especially her brother Kai, who I would've hated in any other show, turned out well.
- Hot vampires. Whaaat? I have a thing for Saya's archenemy, don't tell anyone.
Why you shouldn't watch it:
- Some vampires are not that hot. It's true.
- Don't watch the show if you suffer from Vasovagal syncope i.e. faint from seeing blood because, you know, the show is centered around blood.
- 50 episodes, baby! Although I continuously argue that you need a good amount of episodes to get to know all the characters and build a good story, some people just can't be arsed with long series. Personally, I wouldn't had minded if this show had went on for another 50 episodes.
Conclusion: It's a heart-warming show, and watching Saya transform from an innocent schoolgirl to the person she becomes in the end is interesting to say the least. Her suppport characters are not useless, which is a fresh breeze, and actually play important roles from time to time.
It's not another one of those vampire splatter animes. If you look deeper, the core is about Saya's family and how they try to survive the ordeal.
The ending has some issues, but I won't go into them. It's not a bad ending per se, but some things could've made it perfect. Too bad, since the show was amazing up until then.
But as it is a personal preference, you should definitely give this series a go and make your own judgement.

Other then the background art, how was the actual animation? I know with some super long animes, they have to sacrifice some quality to be able to afford it. Is it "just standard", or does it maintain quality all the way through, like Full Metal Alchemist did?
What's the music like? Fitting? Irritating? Barely noticeable? How about the other sound effects?
Did you watch it with the Japanese or English dub? If english, how was the voice acting? Are there any extremely annoying "ONI-CHAAAAAN!" type characters with voices that make you wait to slaughter them?
What's the ratio of "filler" episodes to actual story arc ones? e.g. 2 story arc followed 1 filler? Are they all worth watching, or are there a few that are just pointless garbage and should have been left out?
This'll be the type of stuff I expect in other reviews, so don't worry, I'm not singling you out. If I hadn't already seen Mushshi, I would have done the same thing to Sol :P I'm just glad you've done one I haven't seen, and want to know all your opinion, since you seem to have liked it.
Regarding animation, I never saw anything that made me go "Wtf was that" or "How high were the illustrators when they drew this pic" like in some eps of Naruto and Bleach. I would say it was standard but above the previous mentioned ones. What you see in ep 1 is what you see in ep 50.
I always watch anime with subs. A friend told me she saw it with english dub though, and there's a guy with a french accent that she wasn't so keen of.
I thought the story flowed on pretty well and didn't notice any fillers honestly. I'm sure there were some, but nothing annoying or remarkable.
the stressful society we have today rejects that. What with fast-paced
winning over source-checks and things like Twitter, short and fast is
better. But that's a discussion for another time
Dude, that's what this place is all about! Real life people opinions
Sure, you might get the odd "No way, wtf, that was awesome/teh suck" but meh, you can just ignore those (or reply to all of them, we don't mind, generates discussions). Especially with anime, I think we appreaciate a clear overview of what to expect before we embark on a 26+ series heh. Like your ending comment. I have significant warning that the ending may not be great, which could probably save me from dissappointment. Now I'll watch it, and if I don't like it I'll be able to say "Meh, at least I was expecting it".
So yeah, by all means, get indepth. If you need an example, read Agamemnons stuff. He does 8 page artiles of fully and heavily opinionated analysis and they're still quite popular with both the love/hate parties.
Anyways, I'll bear in mind this new perspective and write accordingly. It's good to know, some people still prefer an analysis than a summary.
I don't particulary remember any ep that they could've skipped.. I didn't like the Sif-storyline but that was part of the main plot and they served their purpose so not gonna argue against that.
In extremely thick books (such as the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan), the author makes more money by selling more books, so he'll pad out most of the novels with descriptions of clothing and characters to avoid moving on with the plot.
Anyway, they could've easily removed a lot of the flashback sequences (especially the one with the tower that they keep showing in every 2 episodes, that takes up like 8 minutes alone) and they could've cut down the drawn out pauses without removing any actual content.
It's just a very badly paced show.
Lost did this with the 3rd season and it really, really hurt the show for people like me.
With Lost, I just.. my interest dipped (score! I avoided a bad pun).
So, while I understand both of your examples, I just don't see it in Blood+. Except the flashbacks, those were annoying, I agree.
Review: success
Which reminds me, I should pick up Soul Eater now that all eps are out..
I think a single episode was included on the '30 Days of Night' DVD, but, it is really hard to judge something based on the first episode (I think it was that) of the series.
however, there are only a few allusions and basic elements from the
film. Fujisaku has been involved with both works, including acting as
the director for Blood+ and writing the novelization of Blood: The Last Vampire." (Wikipedia)
Unfortunately, I have not seen Blood: The Last Vampire and so I can't confirm the Wikipedia statement. Sorry.
From most of the above comments it doesn't seem like the type of anime to be 'mature' for a large part and then suddenly break into super deformed faces and etc (which turns me away from a great deal).
They've since made it into a live action film, but I've yet to see it. It's actually showing here in theatres, so I might catch it on the weekend.
...but Haji isn't in it, so I might not see it after all. Haji's the best damn character.
I saw the information for the live action movie awhile ago, I had (have) a decent amount of high hopes for it, even though last I heard it was getting mixed reviews.
