I was doubtful at first, another anime about school life? Why should I watch this?
The answer is you shouldn't. Let me rephrase that. You shouldn't watch it if you're after a intriguing story. K-ON has no real story throughout the show, but you know what? It doesn't need a story to be entertaining. In fact, consisting of 13 episodes, I might just rewatch it within a few days. I haven't rewatched any other show so soon after I finished it other than FLCL.
The plot is simple, four girls join a music club in high school. It takes one or two episodes to get the ball rolling, but once it does it rolls steadily and right to the point. It's a slice-of-life show that will make you want to play the guitar (or was that just me?) and with its light-hearted, comical situations and well-drawn slapstick faces it will brighten your day even if it's raining outside.
Browsing through forums and blogs I've never seen an anime get nominated for moe-blob as much as K-ON. If you don't know what moe is, it's usually a trait a girl has that makes her adorable/desirable/captivating.
I can understand why, the four girls each have their own charisma. We have Yui, the guitarist in the band. She is a lazy bum with a sweet tooth and a weakness for cute things. Yui looks a lot like another bandmember, Ritsu, and they often mirror each others feelings (most of the time pertaining to slacking off). Ritsu is the drummer and president of the Light Music Club. She is not very responsible, but full of energy and almost always upbeat. The third member of the band, Mio, is a left-handed bass player. She is a dark-haired, shy girl, who is afraid of a lot of things. Ritsu, being her childhood friend, often tease her, and the whole band likes to dress Mio in various outfits.
Last but not least, we have Mugi, the synth-player. A gentle girl, and from a rich family, she appreciates the small things in life since she has very little experience with them. Always bringing the club pasteries and tea, she's loved by Yui a lot.
Now I know this might be hard to understand, but this show was too cute for me sometimes. Everything was so... for a lack of better words, I'll use the name of their first song. Everything was so "Light and fluffy time". See, even their song lyrics are sweet. I was going to marathon the last five episodes together with some friends and we all decided to take a break in the middle because our teeth had exploded from sweetness overload. This is not something you watch all at once, you need some time between episodes or you'll get borderline nauseous.
These kind of shows are usually not for me, but I actually like K-ON very much, and if I had been one of those grade reviewers I would've given it a high mark. An instrument fanatic will like it even more as there are more details put into the instruments than the girls. Now, I know there is a drastic change in the band about halfway through the anime, but I didn't want to spoil anything so I left that out. Don't write any angry fan mail.

Best Student Council i would strongly consider MOE. i liked it alot, you should check it out if you havent seen it.
you have me convinced to watch this one though. my horizons as far as anime watching are very broad. i can watch the action pack anime as well as the girly ****. (i cant sit through a chick flick or soap opera's though, how odd)

Cuz most Soap Operas are terrible when it comes to making the audience really care for the characters. Watch Rumbling Hearts or School Days or Toradora and you'll be intrigued the whole time.
But yea, K-ON is definitely worth the watch. Anime for real men IMO.

Hmmmmmmmmmm *massages temples* My fav definitely has to be either Ritsu or Tsumugi.
Ritsu is quirky, wacky, creative, and very unique, she definitely stands out from the others because of this. I like how she never takes anything too seriously; the phone scene was complete ROFL for me because it's something I would have done.
Tsumugi is probably tied for my fav character. Although not much of her is shown in the first part of the show, in the later half her character and personality are revealed more in depth. Although she's very wealthy, she's somewhat guilty about it, very gentle, and enjoys the simple pleasures in life. That sounds like the nicest person ever, there's no way I could dislike someone like that. Also pretty hilarious.

I like Mio and Mugi, they're both so innocent with a weird twist.
I always wanted to see Mugi's real villa, thought you would in the final ep but no :/

Hhmmmm... not really my thing, but it looks pretty. I've seen clips of it around, and the animation quality is actually very impressive. Maybe I'll get it for the gf, she loves that kind of stuff heh.
Great review though, keep em coming! I'm actually going to do an "Anime Review Request" blog shortly, since it's been awhile since I last bought a boxet and need some advice on a few interesting looking ones....

Unfortunately this series was incredibly overrated and hyped, which took away people's attention from the season's best series, Higashi no Eden.
As for the show being 'too cute', what did you expect from a show which was only about moe~?

I expected four girls playing in a band.
I agree that it has been overhyped leaving little room for other anime, but Higashi no Eden is on my plan-to-watch list, worry not.
